Attorneys
Kenneth A. Matthews,
JD, Partner,
Mr. Matthews has been practicing law for over 26 years. After
graduating from the University of Okalahoma School of Law, Mr.
Matthews began his practice in Okalahoma, but soon moved to Colorado
where he first developed his practice in corporate, oil and gas and
product liability litigation. During this period he honed his
negotiation and trial skills and subsequently won a number of key
cases including the precedent setting case, Niemet v. General
Electric, 866 P.2d 1361, Colorado Court of Appeals and Supreme
Court. The Niemet case was the first plaintiff favorable verdict
upheld by the Supreme Court following Colorado’s tort reform laws.
Following Mr. Matthews’ own divorce in 1993, he decided to pursue
the practice of family law. From this personal experience, he came
to intimately understand how the process of a family lawsuit had
such a profound effect on the lives of individuals and their
children. After a few years of pursuing corporate interests he
settled on a practice that became exclusively oriented towards
family law. In order to ensure that he possessed the necessary
skills to effectively serve his family law clients, Mr. Matthews
completed a significant number of college credit hours in counseling
and mediation. Mr. Matthews is able to bring his extensive
negotiation and litigation experience as well as his commitment to
making a difference in clients’ lives to the practice. Mr. Matthews
is committed to maintaining a firm designed to fulfill the full
spectrum of needs for the family law client.
“We have developed a customized process to make sure that each
client’s unique situation is addressed. Goal setting early in the
process is key to assuring a successful result. It is important to
take the time to understand what the real goals are for each client.
Many times people are upset and it takes an attorney with a
well-rounded skill set to help them sort through what is really
important to them. Once we are clear on the goals we can move to
strategy, negotiation and ultimate resolution with clarity of
purpose.”
Leslie Matthews, JD,
Partner,
Ms. Matthews is the
Managing Partner for Matthews & Matthews. She has been
licensed to practice law since 1986 and has practiced
law in both state and federal courts in Texas as well as
Colorado. Ms Matthews began her practice in municipal
law but quickly moved into environmental and toxic tort
litigation in the late 1980s before moving to Colorado.
She now practices family law exclusively.
“Part of my role as
Managing Partner is to assure a high level of personal
service for our clients. We have designed our firm
around this commitment and we make sure that we get the
feedback we need to continuously improve and assure that
your experience working with our firm stands out.”
Sergei Thomas, JD, Associate,
Sergei Thomas has been
practicing law in Colorado for over 16 years. Following
his graduation from Washburn University School of Law,
Mr. Thomas began his practice with the Jefferson County
District Attorney’s office. While practicing as a Deputy
District Attorney, Mr. Thomas gained significant trial
experience in all aspects of Criminal Law from DUI’s to
Homicides.
Although the nature of cases handled by the District
Attorney’s office vary greatly, Mr. Thomas chose to
focus on juvenile cases and other issues pertaining to
children. He also volunteered on several non-profit
executive boards and devoted much of his time as a
volunteer to youth issues and delinquency prevention.
Given his interest and commitment to children’s issues,
it has been a natural transition for Mr. Thomas to move
his practice into the area of family law. His
significant trial experience and the knowledge he gained
working with children and issues that impact them has
provided a strong foundation for Mr. Thomas’s work as a
Family Law Attorney.
“ I enjoy working with Family Law clients very much.
I have always been committed to assisting people to work
their way through a system that can be frustrating and
confusing. I feel that in Family Law I have my best
opportunity to really take care of people and their
children.”
Paralegals
Clare Sullivan Mangan, paralegal,
Clare Mangan has been a practicing paralegal since 2002,
following her graduation from the University of Iowa
with a BA in Political Science and Sociology.
Clare began her paralegal career in Chicago, working for
a large intellectual property firm. There, she obtained
the organizational and litigation skills necessary to be
a top-notch paralegal, with expertise valuable to any
type of litigation practice.
Clare moved to Colorado in 2006. She was looking to take
her paralegal skills and apply them to a law practice
where she would have direct contact with clients, as
well as opportunities to make a difference for people on
a day-to-day basis.
We are excited to have Clare as a key member of our
legal team. She is on the front line with our clients.
We know it is important to speak to someone directly
when you call our office. When our attorneys are in
Court or in a meeting, you can speak with Clare and
discuss the state of your case. Clare will be able to
answer most non-legal-advice questions as well as
schedule a call or meeting with your attorney.
“After working with corporate clients for a number
of years, I really wanted to be in a field where I could
work directly with individuals. It is very important to
me to feel like I am making a difference in someone’s
life. I love the personal touch I can give clients here
at Matthews & Matthews. When I speak to a client, I want
to assure them that I know what is going on and that I
am on top of their case. I feel that my ability to
listen with compassion coupled with my organizational
skills and legal experience make family law the right
field for me.”
